MEMBERSHIP UPGRADE

Upgrading your Membership, Time to raise your professional status

As a professional body, the Institute of Information Management (IIM), Africa encourages its members to undertake continuing professional development activities at all levels of membership.

The IIM Continuing Professional Development (IIM-CPD) is the means by which information management professionals maintain and enhance their knowledge and skills. The world is moving ever faster so on-going CPD is essential to support IM professionals in their current role as well as helping them with career progression. CPD is all about upgrading knowledge, skills and capabilities to remain effective and compliant.

Almost everything that improves your knowledge and skills is considered as CPD and can be applied to your membership upgrade provided the required points has been met. By participating in learning activities, you are contributing towards your Continuing Professional Development. Use CPD to upgrade your membership grade today by contacting membership department.

You are qualified for membership upgrade if you are already a member of IIM and has recently met any of the following conditions:
1. Attendance of Courses and Conferences, including lectures, seminars, workshops, webinar and online learning courses.
2. Preparation and publication of a book relating to Information Management, Records Management, Data management, Information Security and other related topics.
3. Lecturing and tutoring on Information Management and related subjects.
4. Setting and marking Institute examinations and examinations for other bodies on information Participation in Information Management related community activities
5. Time spent on Information Management related activities, projects, consultancy etc.
6. Attempted and passed IIM membership upgrade examination.

Fellow members can apply their CPD towards exemption from IIM Certification modules. Please ensure that your current subscription has been paid in full before submitting your upgrade application.

NOTE: UPGRADING TO FELLOW AFTER MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS IS DEPENDENT ON RECOMMENDATION BY THE MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE THROUGH STIPULATED CRITERIA AND RATIFICATION BY GOVERNING COUNCIL.

IIM RETIREE POLICY/GRADE

Members of IIM who have retired from full-time, active employment at the age of 60 can request an upgrade to the IIM Retired Fellow/Member Grade. Individuals can apply for the IIM Retired Fellow - FIIM (Ret) Grade before the expiration date of their current annual membership subscription.

Changes in Status/Benefits

1. No obligation to collect and submit Mandatory Annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points or recertify by exam upon retiring certification.
2. Maintenance of membership/certification in "good standing".
3. Membership/certification remains active and is not deleted from records, allowing for potential reinstatement without CPD point submission or recertification by exam.
4. Ineligible to vote or contest elective positions into the Executive Council but eligible to serve on the advisory board.

Eligibility for IIM Retired Fellowship/Membership/Certification:

1. Current or former IIM members.
2. Retired from professional careers without ongoing work income
3. Maintained continuous IIM membership/fellowship/certification for at least two (2) consecutive years.

Application for IIM Retired Fellowship/Membership/Certification:

1. Accredited members can apply for the IIM Retired Fellow/Membership/Certification at any time.
2. Good standing for at least two (2) consecutive years before application.
3. Meeting other prerequisites set by the IIM membership committee, including applicable upgrade fees.

Upon achieving retired status:

1. Designation usage of FIIM (Ret), SPMIIM (Ret).
2. No further requirements CPD.
3. Listing in the Credentialing Directory on the IIM website as holding the retired FIIM or SPMIIM, coded as FIIM-R and SPMIIM-R.
4. Ineligibility for voting or contesting elective positions but participation in various committees and working groups.
5. Retired status signifies a life membership.
6. Upon certification retirement, a new certificate is issued without an expiration date, labeled as "retired".

Re-activating your IIM Retired Fellowship/Membership/Certification:

1. To reinstate after retirement, contact membership@iim-africa.org, initiating a new two-year recertification period and CPD credit accrual upon reinstatement.

Please note: Certification retirement isn't an alternative method for retaining certification due to hardship or inability to obtain required CPD points or recertification by exam. Contact membership@iim-africa.org for further guidance if unsure or ineligible for certification retirement status.
