Overview

Information Management refers to the systematic planning, creation, acquisition, organization, governance, security, use, exchange, preservation, and disposal of information throughout its lifecycle. IIM Standards are developed to promote high-quality professional practices, technical guidance, and industry specifications that support interoperability, consistency, and excellence within the Information Management profession.

Information Management Standards provide high-level guidance on expected behaviors, best practices, and professional conduct, supporting the long-term vision for Information Management across sectors.

Application of Standards

Standards serve as powerful operational, governance, and business tools for organizations of all sizes. They enable organizations to:

  • Improve efficiency and operational performance
  • Manage information-related risks effectively
  • Demonstrate quality and professionalism to stakeholders
  • Embed best practices into policies, systems, and procedures
  • Support sustainability, compliance, and continuous improvement

Mission

The mission of the Standards Working Group is to identify, develop, review, and promote applicable Information Management standards across all stages of the information lifecycle and across diverse sectors of the economy.

Objectives

The principal objectives of the Working Group are to:
  • Serve as a professional forum for the exchange of knowledge, experience, and best practices
  • Develop IIM standards, recommendations, manuals, specifications, procedures, policies, questionnaires, and position papers
  • Identify and propose standards-related projects and initiatives
  • Support the development of workshops and technical sessions for IIM conferences and events
  • Monitor regulatory and policy developments affecting Information Management
  • Represent IIM at national, regional, and international technical forums

Governance and Operations

The Standards Working Group aligns its work with relevant international standards frameworks. It operates as an advisory and developmental body and does not possess an independent legal mandate or implementation authority. Meetings are convened as required, and sub-working groups may be established to address specific technical areas.
